Frequently asked questions

Student tutoring

How much does your dyslexia tutoring cost?

There’s no single set fee for Read Write Spell Right’s dyslexia tutoring. How much you pay depends on your student’s individual needs, and this is something we can quickly identify in a free 20-minute call with Principal Kimberly Downey. Just go here to schedule yours.

How often does tutoring take place?

At Read Write Spell Right, we strongly recommend a minimum of two one-hour dyslexia training sessions per week. This principle applies whether tutoring takes place in person, virtually, or through a mix of the two. To make even faster progress, many of our students add extra sessions during school vacations. Just schedule a free 20-minute call with Principal Kimberly Downey to explore what would work best for your student.

Do you travel to the student's home?

No. All Read Write Spell Right dyslexia tutoring sessions either take place at Principal Kimberly Downey’s home in Annandale, VA, or online via Zoom. If you’d like to find out more about these options, please schedule a free 20-minute call with Kimberly.

What's the best tutoring format?

It depends on where you are located and your logistics.  In-person dyslexia tutoring has obvious benefits, but if your student can’t travel to Annandale VA, online is a really great alternative. And many Read Write Spell Right students follow a hybrid model — some sessions in person, some online via Zoom.  If you’d like to find out more about these options, please schedule a free 20-minute call with Kimberly.

How long does it take the student to complete?

Read Write Spell Right uses the 10-level Barton Reading & Spelling system and this takes a minimum of three years to complete. That pace involves a commitment of at least two sessions a week with our Principal Kimberly Downey. Actual experiences always depend on the individual student’s starting point, progress, and the other factors in their life. To explore this in more detail, schedule a free 20-minute call with Kimberly.

Can you tutor students at boarding school?

Yes. We can work remotely with students who are boarding at a private or parochial school. This can take place during a free period or sometimes even during a language arts lesson. Note that public schools do not support this arrangement. For more information about how this works, just schedule a free 20-minute call with Read Write Spell Right Principal Kimberly Downey.

What dyslexia tutoring system do you use?

Our tutoring bedrock at Read Write Spell Right is always the Barton Reading & Spelling System. But by taking a personalized approach we can enhance the student’s experience and success through other complementary modalities. Just schedule a free 20-minute call with Principal Kimberly Downey to discuss what would work best for your dyslexic student.

Do you consult with class or special education teachers?

Yes, whenever it’s necessary — it always depends on the individual student’s unique circumstances. Note that this service is billed at Read Write Spell Right’s hourly IEP consulting rate. To find out more about how this works, please schedule a free 20-minute call with Principal Kimberly Downey.

Does tutoring depend on a dyslexia evaluation?

No — but almost all Read Write Spell Right students have had an educational evaluation before they start their Barton dyslexia tutoring, and we highly recommend that they do. To find out more, please schedule a free 20-minute call with Principal Kimberly Downey.

Dyslexia screening

How much is the screening?

Read Write Spell Right charges $225 for a NeuroLearning dyslexia screening. This covers the cost of the test itself plus student guidance from our Principal, Kimberly Downey, and a follow-up call to discuss the results and next steps.

What do the results show?

A higher total score means that an individual will experience a significant degree of dyslexia-associated challenges learning to read and spell. Progress learning these skills in the early grades will be slower than many comparably bright peers.

How long do results take?

The results of the assessment are emailed to you as a PDF the same day.

Personalized 1-to-1 dyslexia tutoring

All Read Write Spell Right dyslexia tutoring is delivered 1-to-1 by Kimberly Downey through one-hour sessions. These are scheduled twice a week to maintain fidelity and ensure continued progress. Aspects of each session are customized so the student leaves with a real sense of accomplishment and mastery.

01

In-person tutoring

The Read Write Spell Right philosophy is that, whenever possible, in-person dyslexia tutoring is best. This is particularly true for the youngest students. We have offered this option uninterrupted since 2013.

02

Hybrid tutoring

Mixing in-person and remote dyslexia tutoring eases logistical challenges — especially during peak hour traffic. And it makes it easier to schedule two or more weekly sessions so the student can progress faster.

03

Virtual tutoring

Read Write Spell Right has been delivering Barton Reading & Spelling sessions remotely since 2017, using dedicated software. This format works wells for most students and our virtual service is available US-wide.
